What Shapes Satisfaction with Democracy? Interests, Morals, and the German East–West Divide

Abstract Thirty years after reunification, East and West Germany are still characterized by a considerable difference in satisfaction with democracy (SWD). This paper proposes tests model which assumes SWD to be shaped the interests (economic cultural) moral values individuals demand see fostered democratic system. Empirical application of reveals substantial differences between German function that economic is much more important than whereas opposite applies concerns. Demands on redistribution immigration policies—conceptualized as proximate drivers SWD—also shape differently West, addition being morals different ways. East–West relationship demands levels demand.
